On March 27, 2022, at 21:30 hours, a witness in Douai, France observed a silent triangular object from his backyard while letting his dogs out. The witness initially spotted the phenomenon slightly to the right of a neighbor's rooftop antenna, moving in a straight trajectory. After briefly looking down to reposition himself, he resumed observation to find the object had shifted position, now appearing between his neighbor's antenna and his own. The object presented as an equilateral triangle with sharp, defined edges, displaying a luminous color described as pink, orange, or coral. Small, brighter lights of indeterminate number were visible along the two sides adjacent to the forward point. The object moved silently and steadily, appearing to follow a path aligned with the street behind the witness's property, before disappearing behind a line of tall pine trees bordering the neighboring property after an estimated 10-20 seconds. No changes in appearance or behavior were observed throughout the entire sequence. GEIPAN classified this case as 'D1' - unidentified phenomenon after thorough investigation. The investigation, conducted over an extended period and requiring numerous verifications, was initially conducted remotely and then supplemented by field investigations throughout 2023. GEIPAN rated the case consistency as 'good' despite having only a single witness and no photographic or video evidence, noting that the testimony was highly detailed and provided the day after the observation. The investigation successfully ruled out conventional aircraft (except for the highly improbable scenario of a small craft at very low altitude, silent and without a transponder) and extensively examined the drone hypothesis. The drone hypothesis was considered plausible due to the object's movement pattern, apparent speed, and proximity to the Douai correctional facility, which could suggest surveillance or reconnaissance activity. However, multiple factors undermined this explanation: the sharp triangular form matched no known civilian drone model, calculations indicated only large drones (≥1 meter) could have been visible at the minimum distance of approximately 28 meters, such large drones would have been audible at that range despite ambient noise, the lighting configuration matched no known civilian or military drone markings according to a French Navy drone instructor, and nighttime drone flights over restricted areas would constitute serious regulatory violations. Commercial drone operators in the area reported no operations matching the description, and drones illegally used near prisons are typically small hobby quadcopters bearing no resemblance to the observed object.
